You can use FaceTime text tools only if you have a TrueDepth camera on your iPhone, including the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. FaceTime text options are not available on other iPhone models.

Steps

Place or accept a FaceTime video call. If you're not sure where to begin, see this article to get acquainted with FaceTime.
- If you haven't updated your iPhone or iPad to iOS 12 or later, you'll need to do so now.

Tap the video. Tapping anywhere on the screen during your video call will display three icons along the bottom.

Tap the star icon on the bottom-left. This button looks like a black star icon on a white button in the lower-left corner. Several new icons will appear.

Tap the blue Aa icon. It's in the row of icons at the bottom of the screen. This opens a list of all your text options.

Select the text style you want to use. Scroll down through all of the text options, and tap the text style you want to use. This adds a text box on the video, and opens your keyboard.

Type your message. You can delete the placeholder "Text" in the text box, and type your own words here.

Tap on the video to close your keyboard. If you finished typing your message, just tap on the video to go back to full-screen.

Tap the X icon on the Text panel. It's in the upper-right corner of the text styles menu at the bottom of your screen. It will close the text menu.

Tap the star icon on the bottom-left. This will close the effects bar, and switch your video chat to full-screen.

Hold down and drag the text box. You can drag and drop the text anywhere on the video.
- Use one finger to drag the message to the desired location.

Pinch on the text with two fingers to change its size. You can make the text bigger or smaller anywhere.
- To increase the size of the message, place two fingers on the screen over the text box, and drag them apart.
- To make the message smaller, pinch two fingers together on the text.
