How Long Does It Take To Get Test Results for A Procedure?

If you have just received one of many diagnostic tests to identify disease, injury, or ailment, chances are you are waiting anxiously for the radiology report. One of the most common queries radiology patients have is "how long will it take to receive the all-important test results?" Below, we will discuss some routine imaging procedures and how long you can expect to be awaiting important results.

Mammogram

Mammograms are used to diagnose breast cancer. This test is a woman's strongest defense for early detection. Mammograms are recommended after the age of 40 for most women and should be received annually. Unfortunately, the test results for a mammogram are not immediate. For most women, it takes around 2 weeks to receive the results.

CT Scan

CT Scans are one of the few tests where your doctor or radiology can receive test results nearly immediately. Your radiologists will review and interpret your CT scan as soon as it's completed. Within 24 hours, your doctor will receive a written radiology report, as well as copies of the images for their own inspection.

MRI

MRI or magnetic resonance imaging employs the use of a large magnet to create very detailed images of the body. Unless MRI results are needed urgently, it will take two or more weeks to get the report to your doctor or radiologist.

X-Ray

In an emergency, the test results of certain types of X-rays can be available within a few minutes for your doctor or radiologist to review with you. If it is not an emergency, X-ray results are usually ready in 1 or 2 days and sent to either your general physician or to be reviewed with your radiologist.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is an imaging test that uses sound waves to create detailed digital pictures of the inside of the body that are projected onto a screen. Ultrasounds are another test where results are available to be reviewed by your doctor or radiologist either in real-time during the test or immediately after the test. Other benefits of ultrasounds are that they are quick, painless, and do not expose you to ionizing radiation.

It's important to note that most of these times are a bit on the lengthier side of things, and your doctor or radiologist may get your test results to you much sooner! At Rosetta Radiology, we have the added benefit of being run by onsite radiologists, which means when our radiologists receive radiology reports, we will immediately schedule a time for you to go over them with your radiologist in person. This allows you to ask questions and fully understand what you are being told. Find out more about our radiology services today!
